CS Tea: Emily Dolson presents "Learning to control evolution using experiments in artificial life"
Dr. Emily Dolson from Michigan State University will be giving a talk on her research on artificial life.
Abstract: Controlling the trajectory of evolution would be useful in contexts ranging from medicine, to agriculture, to machine learning. However, there are many questions that must be answer about evolutionary and ecological systems before such control is possible. One powerful approach to tackling this problem is artificial life, in which we can build life-like digital systems that operate on the same principles as biological evolution and ecology. My work centers on using in silico experiments in these systems to build eco-evolutionary theory that should generalize to all evolving systems. In this talk, I will discuss some of what I've learned so far, why it's useful, and some future research directions.
