Gender & Sexuality Center Associates

The Gender & Sexuality Center Associates (GSCAs) are part of Carleton’s Peer Leader Program. GSCAs are student leaders committed to strengthening and sustaining a campus that welcomes people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.

In general, GSCAs will help create resources, events, and learning opportunities geared towards supporting LGBTQIA+ students on campus and collaborating with the broader campus community to expand awareness around topics related to gender and sexuality.

GSCA Teams

Marketing and Communications

The Marketing and Communications Team will spearhead thoughtful outreach efforts to both on-campus communities and external groups (such as prospective students and parents and alumni) through digital and print resources. 

This team will work closely with other GSCA teams to develop marketing materials and branding efforts to promote GSC events and programs via social media.

GSCAs serving on this team will develop strategic marketing, communication, and branding skills as well as website and social media analytic literacy and development.

Campus Education & Resources

The Campus Education & Resources Team will focus on promoting education around topics of gender and sexuality. A main goal for this team is to create relevant, thoughtful, interactive learning opportunities, such as workshops, posters, and social media campaigns, for the campus community. 

GSCAs on this team will gain crucial transferable skills in the realm of resource-building, facilitation, public speaking, and LGBTQIA+ topics.

Programming & Mentorship

The Programming & Mentorship Team will plan and execute events and initiatives geared towards LGBTQIA+ students and the larger campus community. This team will split their efforts between annual signature events and weekly programs. They will also be responsible for identifying and coordinating potential new programming opportunities to address shifting needs in the community. 

GSCAs in this position will build skills around targeted outreach techniques, event planning, community building, and program development.

FAQ

What is the application timeline?

  • February 20th, 2024: Peer Leader Common Application goes live on Handshake
  • March 28th, 2024 at 11:59PM: Application deadline for Peer Leader positions
  • April 1st-16th, 2024: Peer Leader offices will review applications and hold interviews
  • April 17th, 2024 at 12PM: Offer letters are sent out to selected candidates
  • April 19th, 2024: Accept/decline offer deadline for selected candidates
  • April 29th, 2024: Peer Leader rosters are finalized

What resources can I turn to as I prepare to apply?

  • The Peer Leader Committee will host an info session for all Peer Leader positions towards the end of Winter Term
  • The Peer Leader Committee will host a Peer Leader Application Review Rush on March 26th
  • The GSC will host an Open House towards the end of Winter Term to go over the application & selection process and answer any questions about the GSCA role
  • We recommend applicants make an appointment or visit drop-in hours with the Career Center to review application materials before submitting. You can make a virtual appointment with an SCA or a career coach on Handshake. 

Can I talk to GSC Professional Staff about the GSCA role before applying?

Absolutely! We encourage interested applicants to sign up for Professional Staff Office Hours (link in home page) or to email gsc@837147.com to ask any questions or simply introduce themselves prior to applying.

Upon request, professional staff can also put interested applicants in touch with current GSCAs to ask questions and learn more about the role.
