Carleton aspires to be a truly supportive and inclusive learning and work environment for every student, faculty, and staff member.

Sadly, we have not always lived up to this ideal. We are compelled to understand how and why individual and structural racism persists in our society and at our colleges and universities, including Carleton, and to acknowledge this problem. We must promptly examine—and change where needed—policies, processes, cultural norms, and personal and institutional assumptions that are rooted in racism.

Dismantling racism requires that we rectify legacies of ongoing injustice by undertaking necessary dialogue and action that can heal, rebuild, and re-envision our academic living/learning community. This will involve active listening and bearing witness; immediate short-term action; and continuous, long-term change.
